NDTV to expand bouquet with one more local news and 2 non-news channels

NDTV Ltd is all set to launch two non-news channels and a second local news channel by the end of this year. Bollywood-centric channel Imagine Showbiz has gone on air on August 15. The Group has also lined up a world movie channel under the NDTV Lumiere brand, which is expected to be launched in the next 2-3 months. The local news channel will be launched in Chennai by the end of this calendar year as part of the NDTV MetroNation bouquet. At present NDTV runs six channels in India and three channels overseas.

Commenting on the content of NDTV Lumière, KVL Narayan Rao, CEO, NDTV Group, said, “The channel will provide access to top quality cinema from across the world, premiering the best of world cinema immediately following their worldwide release. The films from NDTV Lumière will span across genres from drama, animation and comedy to horror, thrillers and political dramas. These films include popular, critically acclaimed films from across the world and also the finest award-winning international cinema from Cannes, Berlin, Sundance, Toronto, Pusan, Locarno, Venice Film Festival and other international film festivals.”

Rao further said, “We launched the first local news channel in September 2007 for Delhi and NCR. This channel has been very well received, getting channel shares higher than most of the national English news channels amongst the NCR viewers.”

Tentatively christened NDTV Metronation Chennai, the second local news channel from NDTV would cover four broad genres of programming - news and current affairs, lifestyle, entertainment and youth. NDTV Metronation Chennai will also take up development and civic issues affecting the people of Chennai.

Raod added. “We are launching this channel in partnership with the The Hindu Group. We are in the process of finalising the name of the channel.” Jennifer Arul has been made the Managing Editor of this new channel.

Commenting on the reason and need to launch these new channels, Rao said, “There is no English city-specific channel other than NDTV MetroNation right now. We have pioneered this genre in India recognising a very strong need for such programming amongst the urban metro viewer.”
