NDTV Network is all set to launch its English language lifestyle channel in the first week of September. This was confirmed to exchange4media by Dr Prannoy Roy, NDTV Chairman, who added, “We will be announcing the name of the channel soon. It will be a free-to-air channel and will be headed by its CEO Smeeta Chakrabarty.”
Dr Roy further said that the lifestyle channel would target the global urban Indian. It would be an informative channel that would cover various issues ranging from leisure to travel and food, etc.
The NDTV Chairman also informed, “We are also launching NDTV Metro Nation, which will be funded through debt equity. We are launching the channel first in Delhi in October, followed by Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai. NDTV Metro Nation would be a mixture of lifestyle, sports, entertainment and local events. It, too, will be a free-to-air channel.”
The sources close to the development have confirmed that NDTV Metro Nation would be launched in Mumbai by November, while the Kolkata launch is in December-January, followed by Chennai.
Dr Roy added, “We will be launching our Hindi entertainment channel by January 2008.” As reported by exchange4media earlier, NDTV had tied up with filmmaker Karan Johar for the Hindi general entertainment channel. Johar’s production house, Dharma Productions, will hold a small equity stake in the channel. He will also be on the Board of NDTV Entertainment and will work on the content of the channel along with being a host of other shows for NDTV Entertainment. He will help originate concepts and new programming ideas for the channel and will be an ambassador for the NDTV Entertainment brand. Dharma Productions will exclusively produce shows for the new channel, which will have the first right of refusal on any programmes that Dharma produces for television.
