The months of speculation over the selection of new Director General of Doordarshan has finally ended with Prasar Bharati Board yesterday approving the name of Naveen Kumar, Joint Secretary in Heavy Ministry for the top post. The post of DG Doordarshan had fallen vacant after the I & B Ministry shifted the former DG S.Y. Quraishi to Ministry of Steel as Additional Secretary on September 2. Prasar Bharati Board approved the name of Naveen Kumar among the 8 candidates who were shortlisted following an extensive round of interviews of the eligible candidates on December 16 and 17. The new DG will be in place by the end of this month.

Meanwhile Prasar Bharati has initiated the process of inducting full time head of DD News channel. After the shifting of Additional Director General, Swagat Ghosh to DAVP, another ADG, Sanjiv Datta has been given temporary charge. Prasar Bharati CEO says that the probable IIS candidates in eligible zone are being interviewed to head DD News Channel.

The Prasar Bharati Board has meanwhile taken a decision to restructure DD News. "We are setting up input desk, output desk and assignment desk.

We are also hiring more people for the channel from other news channels on 3-year contract. We have already appointed Sneha Wasim, ex NDTV staffer as Senior Anchor cum Style Consultant on a salary of Rs. 70,000 pm. As many as 8 staffers --copywriters, anchors or correspondents will join our news channel from Aaj Tak from January 15", revealed Sarma. They are being hired on a salary of Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 30,000 per month. Meanwhile Aaj Tak CEO G. Krishnan has expressed his ignorance about this poaching move by Doordarshan. When contacted he refused to comment on Sarma's claim that 8 Aaj Tak staffers would leave the channel to join DD News.

Meanwhile as part of revamping DD News Channel, Prasar Bharati is holding negotiators with B Sky B to put the channel on their DTH platform in UK. In USA, DD News channel will have piggy ride on DTH platform of Globecast which is already paying $ 80,000 per year to carry DD India on the basis of global tendering.

Prasar Bharati hopes to put DD News Channel on DTH platform in UK & USA within 6 months. It is also preparing to carry language channels - Gujarati, Punjabi, Tamil, Bengali, Telugu on overseas DTH platform. Sarma says that Prasar Bharati will float global tenders and the highest bidder will be allowed to carry these channels and in case the bidding fails, Prasar Bharati will carry these channels on its own.
