My fav TV character: Priya Kapoor

There are certain actors in the Hindi GEC space that have enthralled viewers since years. They play various characters with so much conviction that they stay with the audience for a very long time. One such actor is Sakshi Tanwar of ‘Kahaani ghar ghar ki’ fame. She has rocked the Indian telly world with her portrayal of Priya Kapoor in ‘Bade achhe lagte hain’.

Ashwini Deshpande, Director, Elephant Strategy + Design shared Priya Kapoor is her favourite TV character owing to the way she delivers her dialogues, adding her sensibilities to the dialogue narration.

Priya Kapoor is the main female protagonist of the show. She is the happy-go-lucky daughter of Sudhir and Shipra Sharma from a middle class family until she marries Ram Kapoor. The show explores the worlds of two personalities, Priya Sharma and Ram Kapoor, who accidentally discover love after they marry.

exchange4media chats with Ashwini Deshpande to find out what she likes about Priya Kapoor…

Who is your favourite character in the Hindi GEC space?
It would be Priya Ram Kapoor of ‘Bade achhe lagte hain’.

What do you like about her?
This character looks simple and easy going, but regularly continues to go through very complex (and implausible) situations. What I like is the way she delivers her dialogues. It almost sounds like the director explains the general picture and she develops it in her own order, manner and vocabulary. So the delivery and situation sounds natural even if the content may not be believable at times.

Do you think he/she does justice to the storyline?
She brings a lot of credibility to the plot by underplaying or by delivering quite sharply, as the situation may demand.

Do you think the popularity of a particular character extends itself to the show or a show shapes up the characters?
In this case, I would say the show has shaped her popularity. I am aware that she played a hugely popular character few years ago as well, but there was nothing I could identify with in that show.

How often do you tune in to ‘Bade achhe lagte hain’?
I manage to watch the show about twice a week after it did the five-year leap. I watched it less frequently earlier.
