The recent patch-up between Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi and his grand nephews, Kalanidhi and Dayanidhi Maran, on December 1, is expected to have not just huge political implications, but also have a huge impact on the media business. Sun TV stocks have gone up post the truce talks.
Stiff competition has made both Sun and Kalaignar come out strong, creating assets like comedy, kids and 24-hour news channels. Though apparently it is still called a patch-up between an uncle and his grand nephews, the result of this truce between the two major South players could be a formidable competition to the forthcoming onslaught of the national players in the Southern media market. The news of the recent Star-Jupiter JV has created quite a few ripples in terms of changing the balance of power down South.
More important developments are expected in the coming days.
DMK-backed Kalaignar TV was launched on September 15, 2007. The second channel, Isai Aruvi, a channel exclusively devoted to music, was launched within six months. With speculations of Kalaignar’s comedy channel doing the rounds, Sun launched its comedy channel ‘Thirai’. Recently, Kalaignar launched its 24-hour news channel ‘Seithigal’ and is planning to launch ‘Siripoligal’, a comedy channel, and ‘Chitram’, a kids’ channel.
