Mala Manyan, COO, Raj TV has quit the company. She had joined the company in 2010 and had been handling the entire content operation of the channel. Manyan was reporting to Ravindran, one of the four directors of Raj TV.
On quitting Raj TV after a three-year stint, Manyan said, “To be honest, it’s a mix of both happiness and sadness. Happy because I am venturing into new projects, where the content need not be tailor made to suit channels and TRPs. It will be more satisfying as you can encourage a lot of new and upcoming talent. I am sad because my work ambience at Raj TV was really memorable. I never felt I was working for someone, that’s the kind of freedom I had.”
“One of the major reasons for my quitting, I would say, is because I do not want numbers to decide the quality of content I produce. I want people and not meters to decide what good content is. I know in media I should not be saying this, maybe I am the odd one out,” she added.
Manyan is planning to set up her own production house. She feels that there is a dearth of good producers in the industry. According to her, “There are not many executive and line producers in the industry. There are plenty of investors these days, but not all are qualified to execute a production. Like any other profession, production also requires certain skills – it’s a combination of planning ability, administration, budgeting, co-ordination with artistes and technicians, fore-thought of tiding over issues during pre- and post-production and above all, sincerity and honesty, combined with hard work. I have been doing all of these for the past 28 years. Apart from events and television shows, I am also planning to get into executing film productions, something that I used to do.”
Manyan had started her career with production house Seventh Channel Communications. She has headed the production team of films such as Kamal Haasan-starrer ‘Vettaiyaadu Vilaiyaadu’, ‘Indiraloathil Naa Allagappan’ and ‘Mundhinam Paartheney’.
Manyan has anchored several television programmes produced by Seventh Channel for Doordarshan and has tried her hand at almost all areas in media and production. She has also dubbed for television programmes, done hosting and modelling for brands such as Horlicks, Amrutanjan, Gold Winner. She has also featured in a social promotional film on empowering women, produced by Sakthi Masala Group. Manyan has been awarded the ‘Star Woman’ title by the Sakthi Lions Club of Chennai.
