There is a new player in the Tamil satellite channel field – Makkal TV – which went on air recently. While news and current affairs would be the drivers, the channel is expected to shift from films and film-based content that general entertainment channels have come to adopt. The channel, promoted by Makkal Tholai Thodarpu Kuzhumam, was inaugurated by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
Sources close to the channel said that the channel would attempt to stand out with its alternative content. The channel would telecast seven news bulletins of 30 minutes each and a one-hour news bulletin everyday. The channel would give more importance to content based on women, children, and agriculture.
Sources said that news and news-based programmes would remain ‘strictly neutral’ and added that channel would not carry any content not useful to the society and strive hard to contribute to the society. The channel would also air ‘sensational documentaries’.
Initially the channel would be a free-to-air and talks were on to make available the channel in the prime band, sources said. The channel’s tagline reads ‘Man Payanura Vendum’.
Makkal TV has roped in some senior professionals, including Jayaseelan, former News Editor of Raj TV, who has been appointed Vice-President. The channel has assigned its creative duties to Chennai-based creative shop WOC.
It may be recalled that Makkal TV’s promoters had also launched a Tamil daily a few months ago, titled ‘Tamil Osai’.
Makkal TV is the tenth satellite channel in Tamil Nadu. The other channels include Vijay TV, Sun TV, Sun News, Sun Music, Jaya TV, Raj TV, Win TV, Tamizhan TV and SS Music.
