KKK 3 on a good start, but media planners split between Priyanka and Akshay

Priyanka Chopra and her hunks have been able to draw more eyeballs for ‘Fear Factor - Khatron Ke Khiladi 3’ so far. Season 3 of the reality show opened with a TVR of 5.49 as against the TVR of 4.37 in 2009 and 1.72 in 2008. However, there has been a slip in the numbers for the first week of launch in CS 4+ Hindi speaking markets with a TVR of 4.36 for Season 3, compared to 4.11 TVR in 2009 and 2.03 TVR in 2008.

Media planners have mixed views on the show’s performance. While some feel Priyanka is doing a better job than previous host Akshay Kumar, others think Akshay had the upper hand.

Raj Datta, GM, TME Kolkata felt that last year’s zing was missing in ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi’ this time. He said, “The ‘wow’ factor that was there last year is not there this time. Last year, there were 13 models and there was Akshay Kumar, which contributed to the ‘wow’ factor. Priyanka Chopra is a little lacking in that. Akshay Kumar is a martial arts guy and has done many stunts himself and hence, is a much more credible host. However, the show has just started, let’s see how it goes. As days go by, the stunts will be more difficult. Some people watch it for the stunts rather than who is presenting the programme, but a lot of others are there for who is presenting, which is the key issue. Moreover, ‘KBC 4’ will be there in some time and so will ‘Bigg Boss 4’. Let’s see how much ‘KKK’ will be able to match.”

Anil Sathiraju, Associate VP, South, Mudra Connext, had a different take. Standing up for Priyanka, he said, “I think Priyanka Chopra is the key differentiator. She is a great host and doing a great job. Also, the contestants are really interesting like Rahul Bose, Rahul Dev, Milind Soman, and people would want to watch such contestants. Moreover, this time it is more gory, where they have to pick insects with their mouth. Another reason for better numbers is that if you see other content on television, like ‘Uttaran’ or ‘Balika Vadhu’, it is all very serious content. People would want to watch something light and ‘KKK’ is providing that. This apart, there is nothing right now on television like IPL or KBC to give it competition, and that is very positive for Colors.”

Another senior media professional, who did not wished to be named, said, “The numbers are very decent. Last year, it was Akshay Kumar, this year it is Priyanka Chopra. This time, it is better as guys can perform the stunts better, unlike last time, which had girls. I think this time it is better as there is mix of guys and girls. Can’t comment whether Priyanka works better as it is open to debate right now. Also, you do not have significant competition on other channels currently, which is why ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi’ is doing well.”

Whether the show will keep delivering good numbers only time will tell, but till the time there is some stiff competition, ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi’looks all set to deliver on the initial promise.
