KBC shines at CNN-IBN Awards 2011

Basking in the glow of another successful season of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’, an elated Sneha Rajani, Senior EVP and Business Head, Sony Entertainment Television (SET), told exchange4media, “We came up with a philosophy and took it forward.” To add to this, KBC was adjudged Entertainer of the Year at the CNN Indian of the Year 2011 Awards event held on December 16, 2011.

Team KBC had come up with a new concept this season – that of hope and compassion and giving the ‘aam aadmi’ a chance to dream big. This was welcomed by the audience in a big way, and minus any trace of controversies, the latest season of ‘KBC’ also garnered high TRPs.

Amitabh Bachchan, the show’s host, admitted that this time, KBC “was special because of the quality of the contestants” and the winner Susheel Kumar, who was a living example of the tagline – ‘Koi bhi insaan chota nahin hota’”.

“We’ve done interestingly well,” said, Rajani, adding, “Earlier, we had the belief that only people in the urban areas had the ability to make it to ‘KBC’.” But they broke this myth this season. As Rajani divulged, “In this season, we decided to audition deeper into India, and the results are for all to see – people from the remotest interiors of India participated in the show.”

When asked whether it was a gut feel that worked, she said, “No, it wasn’t just a gut feel, it came out of solid research. In fact, we came up with a philosophy.”

It certainly was a winning formula that worked. “Everything came together in a wonderful way. ‘KBC’ is a fantastic format. We play along with it as we watch in our living rooms. And what Amitabh Bachchan brings into it is phenomenal. So, everything fell into place,” Rajani said.

Sharing his views in his blog, Bachchan wrote, “It’s been a glorious night at the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year Awards. Yes, we won, the team KBC and yours truly, but what a galaxy of great stalwarts of the country, coming together on one platform and giving an inspiration and strength of a lifetime to viewers and the country.”

On plans for the next season, all Rajani would say was, “Right now, we are enjoying the moment. Sure enough, you will see.”

This year was the sixth edition of the CNN-IBN Indian of the Year Awards. The Awards recognise the Indians whose contributions to the country in a calendar year have strengthened the foundation of our society and have helped build Brand India in the process.
