IPL 2013 final match ratings drop by 28 per cent

Cricket is an obsession in India but emotions of mathematics in cricket viewership are as turbulent as the stock market. The TVR rating for IPL 5 final match (CSK vs. KKR) was 8.92. According to TAM viewership data sourced from TAM subscribers for Week 22 (May 26 – June 1) for the CS 4+, All India, the TVR rating for IPL 6 final match (CSK vs. MI) dropped down to 6.90 – a drop of 28 per cent.

A big reason for the fall can be attributed to audience volatility, citing the spot fixing allegation questioning the who’s who of players, team managements and even team owners.

Although digitisation Phase II is underway and it is difficult to measure the exact impact of the cricket bonanza, the tournament, in spite of being in controversies, has affected GECs. Except Star Plus, most of the GECs struggled to attract viewers during prime time. The period loss for the mainline channels could be in terms of revenue or viewership, but there is no denying the fact that at least in the short-term, GECs came under pressure and faced the heat of the sixes on the ground.
