India TV issues legal notice to INX News over renaming NewsX as Independent Media Network News

In a twist in the NewsX/ Independent Media Network (IMN) News story, India TV has issued a legal notice to INX News Pvt Ltd over renaming NewsX as IMN News. The notice says that the proposed name is ‘strikingly similar’ to lndependent Media Pvt Ltd and lndependent News Service Pvt Ltd, the company that runs 24-hour news channel India TV.

The notice adds: “Needless to state that the impugned name is in complete violation of the proprietary rights of our Clients in their respective trading/ corporate names” and calls upon INX News to refrain from using the name Independent Media Network (IMN) News.

It may be noted that incorporated in the year 1996, lndependent Media Pvt Ltd produces television programmes and over the years has produced a host of popular TV shows including ‘Janta ki Adalat’, which is currently being aired as ‘Aap Ki Adalat’ on India TV, which is operated by operated by lndependent News Service Pvt Ltd.

Both lndependent Media Pvt Ltd and lndependent News Service Pvt Ltd are group companies promoted by well-known journalist and TV anchor Rajat Sharma.

Ritu Dhawan, Managing Director, India TV, said, “Independent Media was our first independent venture, founded in 1996. We are emotionally attached to it. It is well known as our flagship company, which produced hundreds of episodes of popular shows like ‘Aap Ki Adalat’, ‘Awaaz’ and ‘Aaj Subah’. I hope and trust that NewsX will understand our feelings and will look for another name for their rebranding.”
