ICC Champions Trophy clocks decent ratings

The television broadcast of the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy has clocked decent viewership ratings. As per TAM ratings, the first kick-off match between Sri Lanka and India on June 1, 2013 on Star Cricket observed a TVR of 0.67 (HSM) and 0.68 (All India), while the second kick-off match on June 4 garnered 0.84 TVR (HSM and All India).

Thereafter, the league matches – India Vs South Africa telecast on Star Cricket on June 6 garnered a TVR of 1.58 (HSM) and 1.66 (All India), while the second match between West Indies and India clocked 1.77 TVR (HSM) and 1.91 TVR (All India). The average TVR for the two league matches is 1.67 (HSM) and 1.78 (All India).

Though the average of the entire series is yet to be determined, the ratings for now can be observed to be slightly higher than the India Vs England Test series played earlier this season, which delivered an average of 1.68 TVR.

It may be noted here that the TAM ratings for the first three ODIs of the India Vs England series played during October 2011 averaged 2.91 TVR, which was significantly higher than both the ICC Champions Trophy and the India-England series in January 2013.

Star Sports 2 and Star Cricket had launched a high decibel marketing campaign earlier with the core theme of ‘Zor Lagao Champion Banao” to promote the ICC Champions Trophy 2013. The campaign, which was based on the insight that there is a symbiotic relationship between a spectator or fan and a player, inherently implied that the spectator becomes as much a part of the game as the player himself.

The ICC Champions Trophy 2013 is the seventh and final ICC Champions Trophy before it is replaced by the ICC World Test Championship in 2017.

Star Sports 2 is airing the tournament in Hindi, while Star Cricket and Star Cricket HD are showcasing the matches with English commentary. The finals will be played between India and England on June 23.

The sports broadcaster generated buzz for the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 by showcasing four of the six practice matches, branded ‘Kick-off’ live, before the start of the main tournament.
