The I&B Ministry had on November 14 directed two news channels – Zee News and IBN7 – to apologise for violation of code of conduct by showing programmes considered not in good taste for viewers by the Ministry. A letter was sent to the channels on November 15, which directed them to run a scroll round the clock, failing which, the channels might be taken off air.
The two news channels had been directed to scroll the apology for three days effective from 12 noon on November 15 to 12 noon on November 18 as punishment for violating the code of conduct.
The channels had aired a show recently on ‘onscreen kissing’, where censored Bollywood movie clips were compiled and shown. The programme, according to the Ministry, was not in good taste for the viewers. While Zee News aired the programme ‘Jumma Chumma De De’, IBN7 aired another programme called ‘Kiss Par Rokh Nahi’.
A copy of the letter sent to Zee News is with exchange4media, which states, “It has been noticed that the Zee News channel is not running the scroll on its television. The Ministry has taken a serious view of the violation of its order referred to above by Zee News channel. They are once again advised to strictly comply with the direction of the Ministry to run the above scroll round the clock without any interruption by advertisement, breaking news, etc, failing which, the channel can be taken off air.”
The letter on behalf of the Ministry was sent by Prawin Kumar, Director, Broadcasting Content, I&B Ministry.
No one from either Zee News or IBN7 was available for comments till the time of filing of the report.
