Hindi GECs gear up for big show launches

The viewers are in for a treat as it’s that time of the year when Hindi General Entertainment Channels (GECs) work aggressively on the new shows scheduled for the second half of the year and pump maximum spends on content as it includes the upcoming festive season.

For instance, Star Plus has lined up four shows including ‘Chakravyuh’, ‘Aarambh’, ‘Iss Pyaar Ko Kya Naam Doon? Season 3’ and ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge, Season 5.’The stand-up comedy show ‘The Great Indian Laughter Challenge,’ produced by Endemol India,returns after a span of nine years with actor Akshay Kumar as the judge. Meanwhile, ‘Chakravyuh’ is produced by Rolling Pictures and Taurus Media.

Sony Entertainment Television has already announced registrations (starting June 17) for the ninth season of ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ through its promo. Also produced by Endemol India, the show will be on air in three months. The channel already has a few big properties lined up including the much-awaited historical show ‘Porus’ by Swastik Productions and weekend dance reality ‘Super Dancer’ by end of the year. According to sources inside the network,the show will be a ‘game-changer in Indian television in terms of graphics.’ “It will be one of the most expensive shows on the same lines as Bahubali,” says the source. A new fiction titled ‘Pehredar Piya Ki’ from Shashi Sumeet Production is in the pipeline though its launch date hasn’t been finalised. The network is also working on a mythological series tentatively titled ‘Ganesha’ and a devotional series called ‘Mere Sai.’

Colors will launch the remake of Doorsarshan’s hit show ‘Chandrakanta’ on June 24 at 8p.m.  Produced by Balaji Telefilms, it will compete with Life OK’s ‘Prem Ya Paheli…Chandrakanta’, also an adaptation, on air since March 4. The channel is also prepping up for the launch of its non-fiction show ‘Khatron Ke Khiladi 8’, which will go on air in July.  It has already announced the registration for its big reality property ‘Bigg Boss 11,’ scheduled around the festive season.    

Zee TV currently has two shows underway scheduled for July. They are the reality show ‘India’s Best Judwa’ byMonozygotic Solutions and weekly fiction show ‘Kundali Bhagya’. The latter from Balaji Telefilms is a spinoff of the current top show ‘Kumkum Bhagya’ and will replace ‘Ek Tha Raja Ek Thi Rani.’

Meanwhile, Sony SAB, wanting to make its programming line-up robust and varied, is launching a daily titled ‘TV, Biwi Aur Main,’today at 9.30p.m. Some of the other shows in the pipeline are ‘Tenali Rama’, ‘Shankar Jai Kishan’ and an unnamed office comedy.

&TV is placing bets on its ‘dramedy’ weekend series ‘Bakula Bua Ka Bhoot’ by JD Majethia’s Hats Off Productions of ‘Sarabhai vs Sarabhai’ and ‘Khichdi’ fame, starting from June 24. A mythological daily show is also on the works called ‘Paramavatar Shri Krishna,’ premiering on June 19.
