HC bans cable operators from airing ESPN-Star Sports

The Delhi High Court issued notices and passed an ad interim injunction against several cable operators in Delhi, Gujarat, MP and UP following a suit filed by ESPN and Fox Sports. The order restrains the cable operators from distributing and telecasting ESPN, Star Sports, Fox Sports, Super Sports and Pehla Plus channels till the next date of hearing which is on November 21, 2002.

Counsels appearing for the sports channels submitted that the cable operators had service contracts with them, which have now expired. They also said that despite their being no fresh service contract between the parties, the cable operators were telecasting these channels without paying for the service.

The court appointed 6 local commissioners to visit the premises of the cable operators and take photographs and video films of all those responsible for broadcasting the sports channels.
