HBO to premiere Oscar-winner documentary ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ on Earth Day

With growing concerns about global warming and resulting climate changes, Earth Day on April 22 assumes special significance. HBO is premiering Oscar-winning documentary ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ at 9 pm to mark the occasion. The documentary has been directed by Davis Guggenhaim and hosted by Nobel Laureate and former Vice-President of the US Al Gore.

The documentary describes the impact of climate change and the severity of the crisis. It drives home the message that we can no longer afford to view global warming as a political issue – rather, it is the biggest moral challenge facing our global civilisation.

Shruti Bajpai, Country Manager, HBO South Asia, said, “Global warming is no longer a local issue, this irreversible damage to the environment will effect our future generations and eventually lead to the end of humanity. Time has come when each one of us has to take a pledge to save the environment. This is a small initiative by HBO to sensitise the audiences about this looming crisis and compel them to do their bit to save the environment.”

As a pre-cursor to this premiere, HBO also organised a green carpet event in the Capital on April 15. The main attraction of the event was a panel discussion by an eminent set of panelists, which included Prof MS Swaminathan, Chairman of MS Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai; Dr Jyoti Parikh, Executive Director, Integrated Research and Action for Development (IRADe); Ravi Singh, Secretary General & CEO of WWF-India; and social activist and actress Nafisa Ali,. The discussion was moderated by veteran media personality Sunit Tandon.

The discussion was initiated by Prof Swaminathan, who expressed his views on global warming and its effect on agriculture that could result in food scarcity. He was supported by Dr Parikh, who stated that more corporates should initiate such forums like the one organised by HBO to sensitise people on the issue. Nafisa Ali concluded the panel discussion stating how vital was it to showcase documentaries like ‘An Inconvenient Truth’, which highlight issues of global warming and its effects.
