IBN Lokmat, the Marathi news channel from the GBN stable, is set to launch on Sunday, April 6, 2008. Rajdeep Sardesai, Editor-in-Chief, CNN-IBN and IBN7, is the Executive Editor of the 24-hour Marathi news and current affairs channel.
Nikhil Wagle, Editor, IBN Lokmat, said, “On Sunday we have Gudi Parv, which is the Maharashtrian New Year and a very auspicious day for us. Therefore, we have decided to launch our channel on that day. In addition to hard news, we would also run special programmes throughout the day on Sunday. We also air an interview of Sachin Tendulkar. This is his first mega television interview.”
He further said, “The channel would deal with issues and problems of Maharashtra and also air programmes that would be of interest to the citizens of Maharashtra.”
IBN Lokmat’s state-of-the-art studio is based at Vikhroli. The channel would promote itself through its network partner Network18 Group and run commercials on CNN-IBN, IBN-7, CNBC Awaaz and CNBC TV 18 in addition to other media. The Network, created by IBN, includes 13 bureaux spread across the state, with 100 stringers. The editorial staff represents the whole of Maharashtra and is not Mumbai centric.
Lokmat is the biggest newspaper chain with multiple editions in Maharashtra. There would be no frivolous journalism, but serious popular journalism, Wagle had assured earlier.
