Dr Subhash Chandra elected to Rajya Sabha

Dr Subhash Chandra, the chairman of Essel Group of Companies, was elected to the Rajya Sabha today in a closely contested election held in seven states.

The ruling BJP party has backed Dr Chandra for his Rajya Sabha berth. He contested the election as an independent candidate from Haryana.

The elections were held given that 55 Rajya Sabha members from 15 states are retiring between June and August. Saturday's elections for 27 seats were held in seven states.

Often referred to as the media mogul of India, Dr Chandra is not only the pioneer of country’s first satellite Hindi channel Zee TV, but has been associated with numerous philanthropic activities.
