Doordarshan gears up for live coverage of Gujarat elections

Sabse Tez Channel better watch out. Doordarshan despite the handicap of not having its own news channel, is gearing up to mount the fastest coverage of Gujarat elections on its flagship DD1 channel, giving run for its money to private news channels.

Doordarshan will be doing the continuous live coverage of Gujarat elections in the form of news bulletins and studio discussions on the counting day - December 15. According to Doordarshan DG, S.Y. Quraishi, the DD1 channel on that day will be converted into a News Channel, beaming real time results of Gujarat elections. In fact, he promises that with Doordarshan's linkage to National Informatics Centre and with hot switching from various places, Doordarshan will be able to provide election results within two minutes of their declaration by the Returning Officers, fastest than any other channel.

Doordarshan's News Division is sending three correspondents from New Delhi to supplement the news gathering efforts of its Regional News Bureau in Gujarat. Sunit Tandon and Neelam Sharma have been drafted as studio anchors for the live coverage of Gujarat elections. Psepholgist Naveen Surpiani will be available in the studio to analyse trends and election results. The entire coverage including the graphics, will be done in-house. This time Doordarshan is not doing any exit poll on Gujarat. However Doordarshan bosses are toying with the idea of marketing the live telecast of Gujarat elections.
