Discovery signs distribution deal with Sony

Discovery has signed a distribution deal with Sony Entertainment Television (SET). According to the deal, SET will distribute both the Discovery channels - Discovery and Animal Planet - for the Indian market. A formal announcement from Discovery and SET is expected shortly.

According to industry analysts, while Sony’s main competitors in the market were complete with their bouquet, Sony somehow was incomplete. With this deal, the channel is in a position to offer a wider range of products and gain greater acceptance with cable operators.

SET distributes four channels - SET, SET MAX, AXN and CNBC. This four-channel Sony bouquet is offered to the cable operators at Rs 27.5 per connection per month. According to the industry sources, the deal between Discovery and SET was only for distribution. Discovery will continue to handle the ad sales function.
