Day after IPL finish, GECs back with a vengeance

The last eight weeks have been an exciting time for the audiences and broadcasters alike with the one of the biggest properties IPL working its charm yet again. But with the IPL fever now behind us, the Hindi general entertainment space is a flurry of activities with the launch of new shows.

exchange4media takes a look at some of the upcoming fiction and non-fiction properties in the Hindi GEC space.

Though the last few weeks observed a silent period, with almost all broadcast players refraining from show launches during IPL, Star Plus went ahead and launched India’s Dancing Superstar on the back of the Nach Baliye Season 5. The channel also introduced a new time band of 6.30PM with the launch of its fiction series Ek Ghar Banaunga.

Apart from the two shows that were launched during the IPL timeline, the channel will soon be introducing a mythology-based fiction series Mahabharat, fiction show Meri Bhabhi and reality show Junior MasterChef.

Sony Entertainment Television also launched a mythological drama series Bharat Ka Veer Putra – Maharana Pratap on May 27, 2013, as well as a reality show Indian Idol Junior starting June 1, 2013.

Zee TV will be launching DID Super Moms on June 1, 2013, an extension of its earlier series of Dance India Dance. The channel will also introduce a new format show Connected Hum Tum on June 3, 2013, which will see Abhay Deol debut on television as the host. Developed originally in Israel, Connected has emerged to be a phenomenon on television across countries such as Denmark, Holland, France and USA and is brought to India by Disney UTV.

Post IPL, Colors is all set to launch the new season of its reality-based dance series Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa on June 1, 2013. Apart from this, it can be recalled that the channel has the Indian adaptation of 24, a new hybrid genre of entertainment that would see an amalgamation of fiction and reality, in the pipeline. The show would mark the launch of Anil Kapoor’s first television production under the banner Anil Kapoor Film Co.

Life Ok, the second Hindi GEC from STAR Network would also be launching The Bachelorette India - Mere Khayalon Ki Mallika, which is based on the international series The Bachelor, for which the channel has officially acquired rights. Also, the channel had earlier introduced a new fiction show Kaisa Yeh Ishq Hai – Ajab Sa Risk Hai during IPL.

Sab TV would be introducing its fiction series Lapataganj Ek Baar Phir from June 10, 2013.

It can be observed that though ficition continues to be the mainstay for the Hindi general entertainment space, channels are getting aggressive on the non-fiction based reality format front, with the number of fiction shows much lesser than the big ticket reality shows. Given the fact that most of the channels observed a GRP slump during the IPL season, broadcast players are keen to create a buzz and pull back viewer attention. Also, with some new formats ready to be introduced, the second quarter of the year would surely see a lot of action in the broadcast space.
