During the previous quarter, Q1FY2016, some of the top TV broadcasters such as ZEEL, Network18, TV18, NDTV, TV Today and ZMCL accounted for ad spends of Rs.535.2 crore. TV broadcasters such as ZEEL, TV18 and TV Today Network saw a double-digit growth in ad spends of 30-80%. ZEEL’s ad spends grew to Rs.96.6 crore in Q1FY2016 from Rs.80.3 crore in Q1 last year.
While TV18 ad spends grew by 32.9% and TV Today’s ad spends grew by an enormous 83.7% as compared to the same quarter last year. TV18’s ad and marketing spends accounted to Rs.135.9 crore in Q1FY2016 from Rs.102.2 crore in Q1FY2015. TV Today Network’s ad and promotion spends of the channel increased to Rs.38.2 crore in Q1FY2016 from Rs.20.8 crore in Q1FY2015.
Network18’s ad spends increased to Rs.211.2 crore in Q1FY2016 from Rs.192.2 crore in Q1FY2015. The ad spends of NDTV in Q1FY2016 stood at Rs.37.21 crore as against Rs.34.33 crore in Q1FY2015. ZMCL’s marketing, distribution and business promotion spends in Q1 was Rs.16.01 crore.
In Q2FY2016, however, ad spends of TV broadcasters has seen a smaller increase in comparison with the same period last year. Some networks have even seen a decline or marginal growth since last year. From the previous quarter (Q1) the total ad spends have seen a decline. The total ad spends of these TV broadcasters in Q2FY2016 amount to Rs.519.09 crore.
Ad spends grow by 10.9% to Rs.519 crore
The ad and promotion spends of ZEEL, Network18, TV18, TV Today Network, NDTV and ZMCL in Q2FY2016 grew by 10.9% from the same quarter last year. The ad spends together accounted for Rs.519.09 crore in Q2FY2016 from Rs.467.79 crore in Q2FY2015. ZEEL saw the maximum growth in ad spends from the same period last year. The network’s ad spends had grown by a high 64.6% to Rs. 120.90 crore in Q2FY2016 from Rs. 73.45 crore in Q2FY2015. TV18 however saw a smaller growth as its ad spends increased to Rs. 127.03 crore in Q2FY2016 from Rs. 117.32 crore in Q2FY2015. Network18 on the other hand had seen a slight decline in its ad spends during this quarter in comparison to the corresponding quarter last year. Its ad spends in Q2FY2016 was Rs. 208.25 crore which had declined from Rs. 220.72 crore in Q2FY2015.
TV Today Network’s ad saw a very marginal growth during Q2FY2016 from the same period last year. The advertisement, distribution and sales promotion expenses of the broadcaster in Q2FY’16 stood at Rs.23.52 crore while in Q2FY’15 it was Rs.23.20 crore. NDTV however saw a large growth of 27.17% in its ad spends during the quarter. The marketing, distribution and promotional expenses of the broadcaster grew to Rs.22.65 crore in Q2FY2016 from Rs.17.81 crore in Q2FY2015. Zee Media Corporation Ltd. (ZMCL) in Q2FY2016 saw its ad spends grow by 9.48%. Its ad spends during the quarter rose to Rs.16.74 crore from Rs.15.29 crore in Q2FY2015.
Lower growth of 3.1% in ad spends from last quarter
The ad spends of these six major networks however declined by 3.1% since the previous quarter Q1FY2016. The ad and promotion spends of ZEEL, Network18, TV18, TV Today Network, NDTV and ZMCL in Q1FY2016 amounted to Rs.535.2 crore. This has now declined to Rs.519.09 crore during Q2FY2016. The reason for this is that, while ZEEL and NDTV have had a large rise in the ad spends during this Q2 from Q1, Network18, TV18, TV Today Network and ZMCL have very little or in some cases decline in ad spends during the quarter. ZEEL’s ad spends increased to Rs. 120.90 crore in Q2FY2016 from Rs. 96.6 crore in Q1FY2016. Network18’s ad spends declined marginally to Rs. 208.25 crore in Q2FY2016 from Rs. 211.2 crore in Q1FY2016. TV18’s ad spends too declined to Rs. 127.03 crore in Q2FY2016 from Rs. 135.9 crore in Q1FY2016. TV Today Network’s ad spends too saw a major decline as ad spends in Q1FY2016 stood much higher at Rs.38.23 crore to now Rs.23.52 crore. This is due the large spends going towards the rebranding of the channel India Today TV during the last quarter. NDTV’s ad spends also marginally grew to Rs.22.65 crore in Q2FY’16 from Rs.21.98 crore in Q1FY’15. ZMCL too saw a small growth as ad spends in previous quarter stood at Rs.16.01 crore and grew to Rs.16.74 crore in Q2.
