CNN has been awarded four awards from the United States' television news industry competition, 'The 23rd Annual News and Documentary EMMY Awards' while HBO has won 24 Primetime Emmy Awards at the '54th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards'.
The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences presented these awards to CNN in a function, which took place in the Marriott Marquis hotel in New York. It won the Outstanding Individual Achievement in a Craft - Direction for 'Exodus' and Best Story in a Regular Scheduled Newscast in 2001 for 'Struggle for Islam', Outstanding Investigative Journalism - Long Form 'Beneath the Veil' and the Outstanding Coverage of a Continuing Story - Long Form for 'Unholy War'.
Delighted by the wins Tony Maddox, Senior VP-Europe, the Middle East and Africa, CNN International said, "The four award winning entries illustrate what can be achieved when enterprising minds are faced with adversity."
The documentary 'Exodus' investigates the attempts made by thousands of Africans to enter Europe illegally each year in search of a better life. While 'Struggle for Islam' focuses on interviews with eminent scholars and practicing Muslims across the globe, examines the many faces of Islam.
'Beneath the Veil', on the other hand sees investigative journalist Saira Shah journey to her ancestral home of Afghanistan to look at life under the iron rule of the Taliban whereas in 'Unholy War' Saira Shah returns to the village of Mawmaii in Afghanistan to follow up on the story of three girls whose mother was shot dead by the Taliban in front of them.
Likewise at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles, HBO received 24 Primetime Emmy® Awards'. 'Six Feet Under' and 'Band Of Brothers' won six awards each. 'Sex And The City' received three awards and the HBO movie that received the most limelight was 'The Gathering Storm' winning three awards.
'Band Of Brothers', received 19 nominations and won six awards for including Outstanding Miniseries and Outstanding Directing. 'Six Feet Under' peaked HBO's list of nominees with 23 nominations and won six awards, which includes Outstanding Directing and Outstanding Makeup.
'Sex And The City' received 10 nominations and won three awards including Outstanding Directing For a Comedy Series, while 'The Gathering Storm', received 9 nominations and won three awards including Outstanding Made for Television Movie.
'In Memoriam: New York City, 9/11/01', received an Emmy award for Outstanding Picture Editing for Non-Fiction Programming.
The best comedy series was awarded to 'Friends' running on NBC.
