CNN International, the world’s leading international news network, has launched the second edition of ‘Eye on India’, in association with hospitality group Oberoi Hotels and Resorts. This dedicated week-long programming initiative that focuses on India will include live nightly prime time programmes, a town hall discussion before a live studio audience, a CNN documentary on India’s relationship with Pakistan as well as interviews with leading personalities.
The week of September 18-24 promises to provide the global viewer with a comprehensive view on the new and modern India and the hurdles faced by this nation of more than one billion people.
With special editions of World News Asia and Talk Asia from Mumbai, and the live debate, CNN Connects, CNN’s top anchors, including Jim Clancy, Veronica Pedrosa, Andrew Stevens, Satinder Bindra, Richard Quest and Mallika Kapur, will look at India as an economy on the upswing, its growing demands for energy, infrastructure bottlenecks, the burgeoning middle class with ever increasing spending power, and the country’s growing role in global politics.
CNN will also examine India’s people, food, customs and rituals, the rapidly growing media and, of course, Bollywood.
Jill Dougherty, Managing Editor, CNN International Asia Pacific, said, “For the week, CNN International will focus on India, a nation of rapidly-growing political and economic influence. Our New Delhi bureau, supported by a number of the Network’s international correspondents and anchors, will present a combination of over 20 hours of live and feature programming as well as a live studio-based debate from Mumbai that connects people offering various perspectives across the world. With ‘Eye on India’, CNN aims to provide a broader and deeper view of India to international audiences who wish to understand India’s evolving role in the world.”
As part of this special India theme week, CNN will host a live panel discussion, CNN Connects: Dialogue for Peace – India and Pakistan, which will be telecast live from Mumbai. CNN’s Jim Clancy will host the discussion with government officials, renowned citizens and political experts from both countries, with live studio audience participation.
Special guests include noted personalities like India’s Minister of Civil Aviation Praful Patel; Pakistan’s Minister of Commerce Humayoon Akhtar Khan; Indian film personality Shabana Azmi; Pakistani cricket captain-turned-politician Imran Khan; Bombay Dyeing Group Chairman Nusli Wadia; Pakistan’s Nishat Group Chairman Mian Mansha and Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf (via taped video), among others.
This live debate will be preceded by a special documentary on ‘India & Pakistan: The Path to Peace’, which features the views of people on both sides of the border on the prospects of turning a half-century of rivalry and conflict into lasting reconciliation.
CNN correspondents Satinder Bindra in India, and Hugh Riminton in Pakistan, meet citizens of both countries to look at the prospects for rapprochement between the two neighbours.
