Cable operators plan to black out all channels from tonight

Cable operators in Mumbai and New Delhi as well as other major metros have decided to black out the broadcast of all channels from 9.00 p m Tuesday up to midnight of July 24. This is being done to protest against the delay in the tabling of the bill to amend the Cable TV Act in the Rajya Sabha.

The leading multi system operators (MSO) including INCablenet, WinCable, Siti Cable of the Zee group as well as other operators met in Mumbai yesterday to decide on the course of action in view of the delay in adoption of the bill.

With operators in New Delhi already having started blacking out channels for one hour daily, the agitation is threatening to snowball and spread to other parts of the country besides the metros.

According to industry analysts, the purpose of the agitation is to attract the attention of the public and to create an awareness on the issue.

INCablenet, Sony, Zee and Sahara have supported the introduction of the conditional access system, (CAS) with a regulatory body to work out modalities regarding implementation.

The amendments to the Cable TV Act were proposed by the Information & Broadcasting ministry based on the recommendation of an expert task force which went into the issues being faced by broadcasting channels on the one hand and cable operators on the other.
