The Bengali TV entertainment space will have a new addition in the New Year. Broadcast Worldwide is launching a Kolkata-specific Bengali movie channel, Tara Talkies. The channel is expected to go on air in January 2008. Initially, the channel will be available on cable/DTH, but would later become a pay channel.
Confirming the news, Rathikanto Basu, Chairman, Broadcast Worldwide (the parent company of Tara Newz and Tara Muzik), said, “Tara Talkies is an attempt to provide an alternative platform for exhibiting good Bengali movies and not necessarily box office hits.”
Basu further said that based on the popularity of their programme, ‘South Asian’, there were plans to launch an independent channel called South Asian very soon. The process for procuring the license is on and the channel is expected to go on air in March 2008. He added, “The South Asian channel is an initiative taken by Tara to build bridges with our neighbouring countries and to explore the common history and culture of South Asia.”
Broadcast Worldwide is also in the process of working out the commercial modules for its upcoming project, a telefilm library. Basu said that the company also planned to come up with mobile television in the future. Tara Television’s website www.taratv.com became functional about a month ago.
