While one frequently gets to know of new shows being introduced on various channels, Doordarshan has remained mum in this regard. Not any more. It seems the new year has given a new impetus to the broadcasting behemoth. DD1, through the news and current affairs specialists in the Delhi Kendra, has recently brought in some interesting new shows.
such as ‘Aap Ki Baithak’, ‘Gandhigiri’ and ‘Roti, Kapra Aur Makan’, among others.
A senior Doordarshan official candidly stated, “For the last 10-12 years DD was sleeping, but has now woken up as the time has come when content, presentation and packaging have become important to make a mark in a highly competitive scenario. DD’s USP is its terrestrial coverage, and we are trying to add a new punch with these new shows.”
‘Aap Ki Baithak’, a popular current affairs programme on DD, will soon complete its hundredth episode. The show, which is aired on Saturdays at 7:30 pm, is an open platform of debate, wherein hot topics are picked and a panel of experts speaks on them.
Virendra Mishra, Consultant for DD1, said, “With these shows we are trying to highlight topics of social and political concern and get logical answers to the questions that concern the common man.”
He admitted that aggressive marketing was required to create awareness about these shows so that people were aware that DD was trying to make changes and taking initiatives in this direction.
Rajiv Kumar, Executive Producer – Programmes, Doordarshan, who has been at the forefront of news and current affairs for the last two decades, has been closely involved in bringing out these shows on DD1.
Meanwhile, a series of mega shows have been initiated on DD, which include ‘Electoral Reforms’ with the three Election Commissioners; ‘Friday Fever’ which covers the gamut of TV rating points, ‘Global Warming’ with Nobel laureate RK Pachauri; and ‘Roti, Kapra Aur Makan’, which focus on the fundamental requiments of the populace.
Meanwhile, DD is gearing up to modernise its technology keeping in mind the Commonwealth Games in 2010. DD will relay the Commonwealth Games on high definition signal. It is learnt that DD is in the process of establishing four studios in Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai for this.
