BBC World launches new show with focus on South Asia

BBC World has launched yet another new television news bulletin show called ‘World News Today’, which targets the South Asian market. The programme will go live on weekdays from July 23 at 9.30 pm.

Nik Gowing will present the hour-long programme each week from Monday to Thursday. “India and Indians are currently making news across the globe across areas as diverse as business, finance, arts and cinema. The show will bring international headlines to the viewers in South Asia,” he said.

On being asked about local coverage, Gowing said that local bureaux are not what they are planning to implement. “There will be a lot of citizen journalism, and the coverage will be based on the sources of information that we have here,” he said.

“Our coverage is already very strong locally, to begin with. We have an integrated system; the radio and television coverage work in sync with each other,” he further said.

Richard Porter, Head of News, BBC World, said, “The show will be compulsory viewing for anyone who wants to keep on tab of global news and current affairs, in India. It continues to support its strapline ‘what affects the world affects you’, which was rolled out earlier this year.”
