All India Radio has much to cheer. The public broadcaster has bagged the prestigious EU-India Media Award, while its Director General, Brijeshwar Singh, has been appointed elected Vice-President of Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA).

The elections to various posts of the CBA were held at the end of the 26th General Conference that took place in New Delhi from February 15-17. Abu Bakar Jijiwa, Director General, Voice of Nigeria, has been elected president of the CBA.

Singh, an IAS officer of 1975 Tamil Nadu cadre, has been working as DG AIR since February 2004. His election as Vice-President of one of the premier broadcasting associations in the world underlines the important role being played by All India Radio in the field of public service broadcasting.

In a related development AIR and Doordarshan have hogged the limelight by bagging this year’s EU-India Media Awards. Four programme journalists of AIR and Doordarshan have been given the prestigious awards instituted by the UK-based Thomson Foundation, with the financial assistance of the European Union, to recognise excellence in reporting on HIV/AIDS in India.

While Atal Sharma of AIR Rajkot has won the award for his programme, ‘Listen, Learn, Live’, Archana Prasad of AIR Lucknow has been awarded for her programme ‘Prayas’. Two Doordarshan journalists – Raj Kumar Robindro Singh of Doordarshan Kendra Imphal and Prerna Sharma of Doordarshan Delhi – have been conferred this award for their programmes ‘Life for Lite’ and ‘Only’, respectively.
