Channel Guide India Ltd, which launched Just TV Punjabi channel in June 2008, is now readying to launch another regional channel by the end of this year. The company has also unveiled plans to venture into content and movie production with focus on Punjabi movies, followed by Bollywood movies. The company has earmarked Rs 100 crore over a 12-month period for its expansion plans.
Elaborating on the company’s plans, Rajendra Karnik, Chairman, Just TV Punjabi, said, “We are looking to add one more channel, which would also sport the Just TV brand name. We are keenly watching the market potential and looking at ways to overcome the stagnation in the market. Though we are yet to decide on the language and the content for the channel, this much I can say is that it will not be a music or news channel. The channel will be distributed through DTH, cable, IPTV, etc. Our licenses are in place.”
He added, “Meanwhile, negotiations are on with various partners to launch our Just TV Punjabi channel in the US, the UK and Canadian markets by September-end. We will be targeting not just the Indian Punjabi population, but Pakistani Punjabi population as well in these markets.”
On venturing into film production, Karnik said, “We are planning to get into Punjabi film production as I feel that there are not enough Punjabi films being made today as compared to other regional films like in the South, Bhojpuri and Bengali films. Currently, only 5-6 Punjabi films are being made in a year, I want to bring that number to 20.”
He further said, “We are in talks with producers and companies for the same and hope to work out some deals soon.”
“Currently, NDTV is handling our marketing and sales. At present, we are not looking at hiring any agency, but if the need arises we will look into it,” Karnik further said.
