“I would like the industry to self regulate rather than imposing regulation which is external “ I & B and Culture Minister tells media industry

The I & B and Culture minister S Jaipal Reddy made these remarks while speaking to a media industry gathering organized by CII last week.

Reddy also welcomed FDI both in print media as well as electronic space. He was quick to add that even a leading Hindi daily was able to get the benefits of FDI without referring to Dainik Jagran by name.

Reddy also shared his ministry and government’s resolve to be a catalyst for the media industry citing the bringing down of the duty on printing machinery and equipment in the last budget.

Reddy also shared that his ministry was getting more and more applications for new projects both in print and TV space.

Commenting on the recent incidents of sting journalism, Reddy said that he welcomed investigative journalism as it could throw light on corruption but warned against the dangers of what he termed as Porno Journalism.

When asked about the International Herald Tribune case, Reddy said his governments was looking into it and might allow facsimile print editions of newspapers.

Reddy also referred to the increasing media consumption and said while we all watch TV we refer to newspapers next day to confirm all that we watched. Reddy also added “ I owe my debt to TV but my loyalty to newspapers. I can live without TV but not without newspapers.”
