‘Satyamev Jayate’ is a good initiative…

The first thought that comes to mind while watching ‘Satyamev Jayate’ is how it reminds one of ‘Zindagi Live’ on IBN7. It is a similar effort to bring out issues and real stories that affect India today. But this is ‘Zindagi Live’ with Aamir Khan, and that is a big difference. The show is a very good initiative and STAR India is one of the few media companies that have the power to back such an initiative.

But the big fear that comes with this show is that if it is not implemented well in the way it is projected then it would end up just becoming a drawing room conversation for people. It would become a PR exercise to reach people and corporate houses and for all you know, it would become a ‘Rendezvous with Aamir Khan’. So what they do next is very important.

We should soon start seeing reaction to the show and its effectiveness. While there are some early signals, the success would be gauged in a few weeks’ time. For instance, the show has made an appeal to the Government of Rajasthan; it is early to say which direction this moves takes and the kind of action it would be able to command. In a way, it has the wherewithal to do it; it should just ensure that it pursues the course.

Sunday 11AM is an interesting time to air such an initiative. This was once primetime for Doordarshan with its epics such as ‘Ramayan’ and ‘Mahabharata’. Over the years, this slot lost its primetime value but this is a good time to house ‘Satyamev Jayate’.

All elements of the show are thought through but the important thing is that this is a concept that resonates back with Aamir Khan and the way he has always projected himself, which is being an actor with a social cause.
