Noorings: Reliance Broadcast & CBS, but no Hindi GEC yet? A tad disappointing…

It is one of the most talked-about international partnerships in recent times. Finally, CBS, the international media giant that gave shows like the ‘CSI’ series and sitcoms such as ‘Big Bang Theory’ and ‘How I Met your Mother’, is finally in India. And the partner is Reliance Broadcast, which by no means is a small scale or “safe” player. When the two come together, the expectations are sky-high. And perhaps that was the reason that a Hindi GEC missing from the first set of announcements was a tad disappointing.

However, at the end of all discussions, network heads and content creators were unanimous in stating that people only remembered programmes and not the networks the programmes were on. YouTube is considering creating a linear TV channel compiled from the video clips submitted by its users. Speaking at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week, the vice-president of content, Kevin Donahue, said the company had been considering the idea of a creating TV shows and might even extend that into a full channel.

Tom Freston is leaving Viacom, less than a year after the company split from CBS. Amid a lagging stock price – down 20 per cent since last January when it split from CBS – the Viacom CEO resigned. Viacom Chairman Sumner Redstone issued a statement on Tuesday morning with the news. Freston, 60, will be replaced by a member of the board, Philippe Dauman.
