My favourite RJ: Rishi Kapoor

Since the time we started the ‘My favourite RJ’ column, a number of people have stated that the most missed personality in radio is Roshan Abbas. Thus, exchange4media decided to speak to the expert himself to find who his favourite RJ is...

Roshan Abbas has been known for his unique hosting style and connectivity with his audience. As a RJ, he has created over 3000 hours of radio programming and won a number of awards.

Abbas’s favourite RJ is Rishi Kapoor of Red FM. He hosts the evening show ‘Mumbai Local’. Kapoor has been in the industry for quite some years now and is known for his unique RJing style.

exchange4media chats with Abbas to know why Kapoor is the favourite’s favourite? Excerpts: 

Who is your favourite RJ?
In Mumbai it is Rishi Kapoor.

What do you like about him?
Kapoor has a great voice, good knowledge, lets guests speak and has an instant connection with the listener.

When do you tune in to radio the most?
I listen to radio usually during the morning while driving and occasionally when stuck in traffic in evenings. But most of it is noisy, loud and cacophonous.

With increasing commercial pressure, do you think RJs are able to keep their content objective?
Well, when even the RJ’s spoken bit is available for exploitation, the poor guys don't know how to keep content and advertorial apart. Also, there is no liberty to speak! Pre-programmed breaks give a regimented one and a half to two minutes. Most RJs sound breathless as if they are catching a fast train.

From the advertising and media industry, which personality do you think could make a marvellous RJ?
Both, Prasoon Joshi and Colvyn Harris would make great RJs. Prasoon would be a wonderful presenter for Indian music with his command on poetry and his turn of phrase and Colvyn’s anecdotes would be great for any breakfast show. Alyque Padamsee and Piyush Pandey also would be great to have on specials. In fact, so many ads have Piyush's voiceover and he too is a brilliant raconteur. Advertising folks tell good stories and they would all make for decent RJs.

Kranti Gada joined the family business at Shemaroo in 2006 after a successful stint of over two years in marketing at Pepsi Co. She has been associated with the company for 12 years.
