As Kolkata goes into a cheerful frenzy during Durga Puja, FM radio stations in the city are busy replicating the Puja fervour on air. FM radio players have lined up a series of programmes and promotions to celebrate the festival with their listeners. Most radio stations are making trips to housing complexes, either to judge the puja pandals there or to get the vibe of the festive spirit.
Aamar FM will air a show ‘Aamar Pujor Nandini’, whereby female listeners would be asked various questions at 25 venues across the city, and three winners would be chosen among them. Through another initiative ‘Aamar Flat Barir Pujo’, residential apartments that have registered themselves with the show will have the station’s RJs organising various contests, and prizes will be given away to at least 10 winners from each residential complex.
The station’s contests like ‘Aamar Dhunuchi Nacher Loraiyi’ and ‘Aamar Dhaker Loraiyi’ will award best performers. As was the case last year, Aamar FM will cover and broadcast the Asian Paints Sharad Samman Awards this year too.
Meanwhile, Big FM will be conducting an on-air contest, ‘Trinayanar Khonje’, wherein listeners can nominate a ‘Trinayana’ from their locality – someone who truly embodies the spirit of the Goddess Durga – through SMS. Winners selected from these entries would be felicitated for their achievements in their localities and would also get a chance to host shows on the station.
The station will also felicitate the best ‘dhaki’ from in and around Kolkata in a mega contest titled ‘Baajiye Dhak Lagaao Taak’, in association with Nokia XpressMusic. More than 100 puja committees have already registered for this contest. Celebrities will explore and record the dhakis in action in their respective pandals across the city. Sixteen selected finalists would then perform at the mega final, and the winner will be awarded Rs 1 lakh, to be shared between the performer and the puja committee he represents.
The FM station also lined up ‘Odero Pujo’, an on-air campaign to collect new clothes for underprivileged children, who were then taken pandal hopping and a luncheon treat on ‘Panchami’. The radio station is also an associate sponsor of the Shera Samajkalyan Award that identifies the puja committee with the best social motive that will make a difference to the lives of the underprivileged. Big FM also has alliances with 25 best pandals of Kolkata and will broadcast live from these places. The station has also started an award category of the ‘Shera Jomjomati Pujo’ in Kolkata.
According to Bodahayan Roychoudhury, Kolkata Station Director, Big FM, “It is our constant endeavour to live the brand-line ‘Shono Shonao, Life Jamao’, and hence, positively impact consumers’ lives in everything that we do. We strive to ensure local connect through our programming mix, which is unarguably a clincher. During Durga Puja, we have put together a wholesome entertainment mix to keep the city thoroughly entertained and glued to our station. With new offerings on our shows during this most awaited festival in Kolkata, we are taking local connect to a new level altogether.”
Friends FM is celebrating the spirit of Durga Puja with a high-powered on-air musical welcoming Goddess Durga. The show featured live recitals by well-known Bengali artistes like Pandit Ajoy Chakraborty, Sreekumar Chatterjee, Susmita Goswami, Srikanta Acharya and Subhamita. The show ended with the legendary Birendra Krishna Bhadra chanting the Mahalaya Strotras.
An audio documentary will be aired that will follow the festival right from the initial stages to the idol immersion. It will cover committee meetings, interviews with idol makers and priests, etc.
While the on-air show ‘Pujo Parikrama’ will feature 30 best community pujas in the city, ‘Flat Baarir Baroari Pujo’ will cover Pujas in residential complexes and apartments. ‘Pujor Smriti’ will feature celebrities and VIPs of the city, like the Mayor, the Police Commissioner, Traffic Commissioner, Chief Minister, etc., recalling their childhood memories of the Puja and how they celebrated the festival in those days.
Red FM’s on-air contest ‘Pujor Jatra’ will choose 10 winners who will be taken pandal hopping with their families on ‘Saptami’ in a special Red FM branded bus. Through ‘Shera Barir Shera Protima’, the station’s RJs and celebrities would be visiting housing complexes to judge the pujas. On ‘Nabami’, the award ceremony will be held at the winning housing complex.
‘Probashi Puja’ is a programme for the NRIs, and RJ Animesh will hook callers in Kolkata to their relatives all over the country and the world, and get updates on how people are celebrating Puja elsewhere.
The station will also run an on-air contest, wherein 30 couples will be chosen to go on a Red FM branded barge and see the immersion. The radio station has also tied up with over 700 pandals across the city and has roped in Aircel, John Players, Samsung and Godrej, among others, for various Puja-oriented activities.
Radio Mirchi’s ‘Shobar Pujo…Khushir Pujo’ campaign was a nine-day activity from October 2-9, whereby the station attempted to bring joy to the underprivileged. Celebrities went on air requesting people to donate towards this cause, and collection boxes were kept at 25 strategic locations like Shoppers Stop, Inox, Fame Multiplex, Big Bazaar and a few colleges, among others.
Said Sriram Kilambi, Station Director, Radio Mirchi Kolkata, “Radio Mirchi has always been associated with Kolkatans not only through music, but also through its spirit of spreading happiness in different ways. This time we decided to share this feeling of pleasure and festivity with people who need it the most. So we requested Kolkatans to be a part of this initiative to make this festive season a memorable experience for all. We are delighted to see the response and are honoured by people’s belief in us.”
