With just about five months left to meet the August 29 deadline for setting up their operations, private FM radio players are now looking for transmission services companies or ‘integrators’ for installing the set-up.
Waiting in the wings are international players such as UK-based NTL, TDF of France and Measat of Malaysia. In India, Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Ltd (Becil), a leading player in the transmission services area, is also in contention.
According to industry sources, NTL, TDF, Measat and Becil have all submitted techno-commercial proposals to the FM radio consortium in the metros. A decision on which company will install the set-up for the FM players is expected within a week, depending on the cost-effectiveness of their proposals.
The selected service provider will be responsible for fixing the common multiplexers, cables and antenna for all the FM players in a metro. Besides, this transmission service company will also help the FM companies in installing their individual transmitters.
