FM Phase II bidding: Adlabs emerges as clear leader in Northern India

The second round of Phase II bidding for FM radio stations for the Northern zone threw up some big surprises and gave some important clues as to how the players might bid in the next rounds of biddings for other regions.

The second round of bidding involved 76 frequencies in 21 cities across eight states of Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttaranchal and Chandigarh.

A total of 104 bids were received for the available 76 frequencies, out of which 63 were successful, leaving the 13 remaining frequencies vacant. The government mopped up revenues of Rs 83.7 crore from the bids for the North zone on January 13, 2006.

Reliance-owned Adlabs emerged as the clear leader in the Northern region, winning 19 cities out of the 21 it had bid for. The only two cities where it could not make it to the list were Varanasi and Karnal. It also became the highest bidder in the second round with its Rs 15 crore-bid for Chandigarh. Adlabs had already won in seven cities in the A+ and A category cities.

Commenting on the outcome, an elated Rajesh Sawhney, President, Reliance Entertainment, said, “We are very pleased with our performance. We will also go in a big way in other regions. In smaller cities, FM radio is an aspiration for the public. We will try to fulfill this need.”

Asked about the revenue generating capacity of smaller cities, Sawhney said, “I don’t think revenue generation will be a big problem even in smaller cities.” He expressed his satisfaction about the bidding process terming it as “close and rational bidding”.

Another surprise was the lesser-known South Asia FM, which bid in all 21 cities and garnered 10 cities. Dainik Jagran-promoted Shri Puran Multimedia Ltd also won in seven cities. Synergy Media, another company by Hindi media house Dainik Bhaskar, also made seven successful bids out of 10.

Zee Telefilms promoted Pan India, which was disqualified in all its biddings for A+ and A category cities, had a better show in the second round of bidding, winning in five cities out of the seven it had bid for.

But the real surprise was the way some big names in the business, and very successful in the first round, acted. HT Music, the highest bidder in the A+ category cities, was conspicuous by its absence. Radio Mid Day, which was also considered a formidable player, only bid for Chandigarh with no result. Radio City (MBPL) also bid only for the same city and lost. Radio Mirchi (ENIL) also played very cautiously, bidding for only five cities to win in two.

The success rate of Radio Today, which made an exit and re-entry into the radio business, was much higher. After winning in Delhi, Mumbai and Kolkata in first round of bidding, it entered Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Rajasthan with four successful biddings out of six. BAG Infotainment also made an entry into Haryana, Punjab and Himachal Pradesh with four successful biddings out of seven.
