TOI's proposed launch shakes up Coimbatore market

It is learnt from sources that February 14, 2011 will be the launch date for The Times of India in Coimbatore. Though official confirmation on the same was not available, it is learnt that subscribers have been getting information that they would be getting their TOI copies from February 14.

Consequently, both language dailies and English dailies in the Coimbatore market have undergone price cuts as well as seen content revamp in preparation for the loss in equilibrium that a new entrant like The Times of India would augur.

The New Indian Express has reduced its cover price from Rs 3.20 to Rs 2, while its Sunday edition is now priced at Rs 3, which was earlier priced at Rs 4.50. However, Deccan Chronicles continues to be available at Re 1 on weekdays and Rs 2 on Saturdays and Sundays.

The Hindu, too, has revamped its content with the introduction of new columns and have even been undertaking marketing initiatives like ‘Spot a Gift’ to people in Coimbatore, wherein gifts are being given if people are found to be complying with traffic rules. The Hindu’s supplement The Metro Plus now comes daily with the newspaper to the Coimbatore readers and the Weekend Metro Plus comes on Fridays along with the main newspaper.

On the contrary, Tamil daily Dinamalar has raised its price from Rs 3.50 to Rs 4 for all days and Rs 5 for Sundays. It is also learnt that from February 6, 2011 onwards, Hindu Business Line will be available at Rs 4 on all days except on Sundays, when the price has been raised to Rs 5.
