The Hindu to hold Metro Plus Theatre Festival in Chennai from August 7-16

Theatre lovers in Chennai can look forward to the fifth edition of The Hindu Theatre Fest, which will be held from August 7-16, 2009. This edition will feature an eclectic mix of plays from India and abroad. There will be six plays in all, which will cover different genres – Greek Tragedy, American musical, Shakespearean adaptation, comic monologue and more.

The fest opens with Motley’s ‘Antigone’, an adaptation of Sophocles’ well-known play that features actors such as Naseeruddin Shah, Ratna Pathak Shah and Benjamin Gilani. This will be followed by Chennai’s Stagefright Productions’ ‘Chicago’, a large and extravagant musical that has a big cast and plenty of colour.

The fest will also feature popular theatre group Cinematograph from Mumbai with the Rajat Kapoor directed ‘Hamlet, The Clown Prince’, a production that swept this year’s META Awards, including Best Play and Best Director. From the US, Josh Kornbluth, who has written and starred in several films as well as a television show, presents a comic monologue that promises to evoke laughs as well and contain sharp insights into contemporary society. The third play from Mumbai is the one that won the MetroPlus Playwright Award – ‘The Skeleton Woman.’ Interestingly, the two playwrights who wrote the award-winning script, Prashant Prakash and Kalki Koechlin, have come together as actors for this production.

The Fest ends on a grand note with ‘Medea and its Double’, performed by a hugely talented group from Korea, which adapts Euripides’ classic play by weaving in aspects of Korean culture to create a visual spectacle that is a reminder of the endless possibilities of truly inventive theatre.

All plays start at 7:15 pm and last between 60 minutes and 120 minutes. The entire festival will be staged at Sir Mutha Venkatasubba Rao Concert Hall, Chennai. A host of allied activities, including music performances and a contemporary Food Court with a loud ‘Desi’ touch are planned at the venue, starting an hour before every show to add on to the excitement of the festival.

For the third successive year, Bose will be the main sponsor of the event, while Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd, LG Electronics, Nippon Paint and Mahindra Holidays & Resorts are the associate sponsors. NDTV Hindu is the television partner.
