Contract publishing does appear to be an interesting alternate revenue route for publishers. One organisation en-cashing well on this is Spenta Multimedia. In addition to the various titles that the media house already prints, it has recently also begun work on the Chartered Accountant for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI).
“This title is addressed to CAs and students. We began with the July issue and we have 165,000 copies in circulation. It was earlier looked after by Living Media,” said Maneck Davar, MD, Spenta Multimedia.
Elaborating the various routes that the media house had taken in the publishing field, he said, “There are various ways in which you can utilise press space. For instance, we play the role of turnkey project for clients like Shopper’s Stop, where we begin work from scratch. And then cases like Birla, where we design and print.”
In addition to this, the group co-owns titles like The Smart Manager. But, it is mainly contract publishing where it has made a mark. Spenta Multimedia today is India’s largest contract or custom publisher.
It began in 1995 with a single magazine – ‘Jetwings’, the inflight magazine of India’s largest private airline, Jet Airways. Today it has other customer magazines like ‘First Update’ for Shopper’s Stop; The Chartered Accountant for the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI); Architecture, Time, Space & People for the Council of Architecture; Life@ The Club, which is a quarterly magazine for The Club, a premium and prestigious club in Andheri, Mumbai; Cruise Control for Tata Safari; and Jetwings International for Jet Airways, a magazine that is totally separate from the domestic edition.
Besides these publications, Spenta co-publishes and markets ‘The Smart Manager’, designs and prints ‘Investime’ for Birla Sunlife, and prints FSO or Financial Services Outsourcing.
Spenta Multimedia is headquartered in Mumbai, with offices in Delhi, Bangalore, Kolkata, and Chennai.
