Nat Geo Traveller India set to celebrate 125th anniv

ACK Media, publisher of National Geographic Traveller India, is all set to celebrate the 125th anniversary of National Geographic magazine. The group is coming out with a Holiday Special issue in March 2013 to mark the occasion. The special issue will focus on destinations in India and around Asia with travel stories from Europe and North America as well. The anniversary edition will also highlight latest travel technology, road trips and adventure.

Talking to exchange4media about travel magazine trends, Manas Mohan, Publishing Director, National Geographic Traveller India and COO, ACK Media said, “Travel magazines, or for that matter any magazine, depend on the content; it’s the main thing in all verticals. There are two kinds of trends in travel magazines, either there is a lot of useable information and it drives the readers like a travel guide, or it has strong feature content that the readers want to read and which help them explore different places.”

He also felt that the niche magazine space in India is taking a hit. According to him, magazines that focus on selective subjects and delve deeper into these subjects will survive. “There is no single magazine that can say that they cover the entire spectrum and claim the number one position,” Mohan added.

He agreed that the average issue readership (AIR) of English magazines has been on a decline as per the latest Indian Readership Survey. He observed that there are many players coming into the market every year and readers switch from one magazine to the other. The digital space is also eating into the print pie, he noted.
