Journalists need greater security when covering conflict zones: Rajdeep Sardesai

“Journalists today are becoming soft targets,” said Rajdeep Sardesai, Editor-in-Chief, CNN- IBN, talking about the imperative need for greater security for scribes when covering conflict zones.

He cited various occurrences in the last couple of years wherein journalists have fallen prey to a mob or mafia.

Recently, a journalist and a photographer died while covering the riots in Muzaffarnagar, UP, when both of them were on duty. A little more than a year ago, veteran journalist J Dey was shot dead in broad daylight on the busy streets of Mumbai. Just last month, in an abysmal act, a photojournalist became a victim of brutal gang-rape at Shakti Mills Compound in Mumbai, stated Sardesai.

In an exclusive video interview with exchange4media, Sardesai threw light on the steps that need to be taken to safeguard journalists. He also shared his view on the sentiment in the news media industry given the tough economic condition.
