The IRS Q2 2010 data for Bengali publications shows the top three dailies recording positive growth in AIR (Average Issue Readership) over the previous quarter. Five of the Top 10 Bengali dailies have recorded positive AIR growths. However, the AIR of Bengali dailies declined by 0.72 per cent on an average over the last quarter.
Anand Bazar Patrika, the top Bengali daily, recoded a marginal growth of 0.11 per cent in IRS Q2 2010 with an AIR of 6,539,000, as against 6,532,000 AIR in IRS Q1 2010. Bartaman is the second most read Bengali newspaper with an AIR of 2,815,000, followed by Sangbad Pratidin at 1,107,000 AIR. Both of them have also recorded positive growths over the last quarter. Ganashakti, however, saw a decline of 4.48 per cent in AIR, but maintained its fourth position, followed by Aajkaal at No. 5, which recorded a positive growth.
Mixed bag for periodicals
Bengali periodicals saw a mixed bag with the weeklies Karmakshetra and Saptahik Bartaman recording positive growth in AIR of 12.42 per cent and 13.77 per cent, respectively. AIR of weekly publication in Bengali language grew by 11.38 per cent. However, Bengali fortnightly publications saw a decline of 1.65 per cent in AIR figures. Sananda and Desh recoded the highest AIR figures even as both the publications saw a decline in readership.
The Bengali monthlies recorded a positive growth of 5.06 per cent with most publications doing well. Sukhi Grihakon, Paraashuno and Peshaprobesh remained on the top of the pack.
