IRS Q2 2010: Kannada publications chalk up a growth story; double digit growth for 3 Kannada dailies

Kannada publications, especially dailies, have shown robust growth in AIR (Average Issue Readership) according to the IRS Q2 2010 results. Three of the top five Kannada dailies have witnessed double digit growth. However, in IRS Q1 2010, four out of the top five dailies had seen growth.

Vijay Karnataka has once again emerged the market leader, however, the daily has seen a decline of 1.92 per cent in AIR. On the other hand, Prajavani, the No. 2 Kannada daily, has registered a strong growth of 14.46 per cent as compared to Q1.

However, Udayavani, which was at No. 3 in IRS Q1 2010, has slipped to the fifth position with an AIR of 854,000, as against AIR of 905,000 in Q1, a decline of 5.64 per cent.

Samyukta Karnataka has gone up a notch to No. 3 from its fourth position in Q1. The daily has received the highest growth in AIR of 21.18 per cent among the top six Kannada dailies, as compared to the Q1 results.

Kannada Prabha has also moved up in the ranking from fifth position (in IRS Q1 2010) to fourth position in IRS Q2.

Among the periodicals, Sudha maintained its leadership position. Sudha has seen a healthy growth of 10.76 per cent, receiving an AIR of 350,000 in Q2, as compared to an AIR of 316,000 in the previous quarter.

Monthly magazine GrihShobha, which was at No. 3 position in Q1, has climbed up this time, registering a 3.48 per cent growth in AIR. However, Roopatara, another monthly magazine, has slipped from the second position to third, witnessing a decline of 5.05 per cent in AIR.
