IRS Q2 2010: Dailies do exceptionally well in Kolkata; magazines fail to keep pace

The Kolkata market has turned out to be a Utopia for newspapers, with all five top five players recording growth in average issue readership (AIR). Carrying the age old tradition, Anand Bazar Patrika has yet again topped the charts with an AIR of 2,807,000 as per IRS Q2 2010 results, a slight growth of 0.50 per cent. Bartaman, its nearest competitor, could only garner an AIR of 1,002,000, but has seen a higher growth of 8.56 per cent.

The Telegraph, also from the ABP Group, was ranked third with a growth of 5.50 per cent. The daily’s AIR stood at 883,000 in Q2. The Times of India followed at No. 4 with an AIR of 559,000 in Q2, a growth of 2.76 per cent. Sanmarg finished at fifth position, but has witnessed the highest growth among the top five dailies at 12.98 per cent. The paper has recorded an AIR of 470,000 in Q2.

The Kolkata market is dominated by veteran players and looks very stable. The ABP Group continues to be a strong force to contend with in this market. The top five list of dailies sees three Bengali and two English publications.

The success of the dailies could not rub on periodicals. Three of the top five periodicals have recorded negative growth. Saptahik Bartapan clinched the top position among the periodicals, witnessing a growth of 5.11 per cent. Sananda, which had dominated the first spot earlier, slipped to the second spot, recording a negative growth of 11.73 per cent. The Bengali magazine has got an AIR of 271,000 in Q2. Desh finished at the third spot with a negative growth of 9.02 per cent.
