IRS 2012 Q2: 7 of top 10 dailies show decline

Media Research Users Council (MRUC) announced the topline findings for Indian Readership Survey (IRS) 2012 Q2. The top 10 dailies see no change in the order as compared to Q1 data.

Dainik Jagran continues its lead among dailies, showing marginal rise in average issue readership (AIR) at 16,429,000 in Q2. There is a marginal increase from Q1 figures of 16,412,000.

On the other hand, Dainik Bhaskar, Malayala Manorama, Amar Ujala, The Times Of India, Daily Thanthi, Rajasthan Patrika and Mathrubhumi have seen decline in AIR in the second quarter.

Dainik Bhaskar is placed second with an AIR of 14,448,000 in Q2, as compared to 14,553,000 in the first quarter. Hindustan has seen a marginal hike in its readership at 12,205,000 in this quarter, up from 12,157,000 in Q1.

On the other hand, Malayala Manorama has lost 55,000 readers during the quarter, garnering an AIR of 9,710,000 in Q2 as against 9,875,000 in the previous quarter. Amar Ujala, too, has seen a decline in AIR from 8,693,000 in Q1 to 8,608,000 in this quarter.

The Times of India, the only English daily in the list, has seen a marginal decline in readership with its Q2 AIR at 7,643,000, as against 7,652,000 in the previous quarter.

Marathi daily Lokmat, on the other hand, added 22,000 readers during the quarter, taking its AIR up to 7,507,000 in Q2 from 7,485,000 in Q1.

Daily Thanthi is placed in the eighth position among top 10 dailies, registering an AIR of 7,431,000 in this quarter, as compared to 7,477,000 in Q1. Rajasthan Patrika and Mathrubhumi have also seen declines in AIR at 6,756,000 and 6,493,000, respectively.
