It’s curtains for one media product. The India Today Group has stopped the publication of its afternoon tabloid ‘Today’ as of May 26, 2007, after a run of a little more than five years. The move was widely anticipated ever since the group announced its plans to launch a morning daily through its joint venture with the Daily Mail of UK.
Launched on April 29, 2002, the tabloid was the group’s first foray into the daily market. Visually appealing and an almost all-colour offering, it was created especially for Delhi’s urban youth segment. The 16-page afternoon paper was published from Monday to Friday.
Ashish Bagga, CEO, India Today Group, told exchange4media, “‘Today’, in its current format, has ceased publication as a precursor to the new morning daily that is planned by the group in association with Daily Mail, UK. The existing ‘Today’ staff will be trained and oriented to bring out the new daily,”
When asked if the decision was prompted by an inadequate market for afternoon papers in Delhi, Bagga said, “The morning market is bigger and more lucrative, and also has several gaps which we will be addressing with our new offering.”
Besides India Today, the group publishes Business Today, Cosmopolitan, Men’s Health, Prevention, Good Housekeeping, Design Today among its titles. The group is into diversified media with interests in magazines, newspaper, television, radio, Internet, books and music.
