HT Media Ltd owned Hindi daily, Hindustan, is launching its Kanpur edition from August 8, 2006. This is Hindustan’s fifth edition in Uttar Pradesh. The paper had launched its Agra edition last month. The Kanpur edition has been priced at Rs 3.
“We have been focusing on the UP market for some time as it is the largest Hindi market,” said Anand Bhardwaj, VP, Marketing, HT Media Ltd. The company had launched the Meerut edition of Hindustan in February this year.
While Agra, Meerut and Delhi editions are all-colour editions, the Kanpur edition will initially be a semi-coloured daily. According to IRS 2006 R1 figures, Jagran is the clear market leader in Uttar Pradesh, Amar Ujala is at No. 2 and Hindustan is placed at No. 3.
In all, Hindustan has 12 editions – apart from the five edition in UP, the paper has three editions each in Bihar and Jharkhand and one in Delhi. “Since the relaunch of Hindustan in the Delhi NCR region, our circulation has gone up by one lakh copies and we are gearing for the No. 2 spot when the next round of readership figures are declared,” Bhardwaj said.
Speaking to exchange4media in November last year, Rajiv Verma, CEO, HT Media Ltd, had said that the company was planning to launch a Madhya Pradesh edition of Hindustan in five months’ time. When asked why the MP edition had not happened yet, Bhardwaj said, “The project is on and it may happen soon.”
