Facing intense flak, Shoma Chaudhury quits as Tehelka Managing Editor

In a rapid churn of events, the Tehelka sexual assault case has claimed another head. Shoma Chaudhury, Managing Editor, Tehelka has tendered her resignation. She is the sixth journalist to have quit the magazine in the last few days after the assault charges against Tehelka Editor Tarun Tejpal hit the news stream.

In her resignation letter, Chaudhury defended herself by saying, “To my mind, I acted on instant outrage and solidarity for our colleague as a woman and co-worker... There were only two days to act on the complaint before the story broke in the press.”

She further stated, “Over the past week, I have been accused of an attempt to "cover-up" and for not standing by my feminist positions. While I accept that I could have done many things differently and in a more measured way, I reject the allegations of a cover-up because in no way could the first actions that were taken be deemed suppression of any kind.”

Meanwhile, the Delhi High Court will decide on Tejpal’s request for bail on Friday, November 29, 2013. It refused to stop the Goa Police from arresting him till then. Tejpal has been ordered to meet the Goa Police for interrogation at 3 pm on Thursday, November 28.
