Anil Kumble spins a new game plan

The Kumble brothers, Anil and Dinesh have decided to expand their joint venture company, Stumpvision by launching a sports tabloid. Titled Sportvision, the weekly offering is to cover news from the world of local, national and international sports. The date of the launch is yet to be finalized.

“Yes, we are looking at launching a sports tabloid and are in the process of working out the details,” says Dinesh Kumble confirming the development. Sportvision will concentrate on sports at all levels – local, national and international. Along with a generous sprinkling of cricket and other sports, it will cover not so popular games like kho-kho and kabbadi. Says Shanker Subramaniam, Marketing Manager, Stumpvision, “It is designed in such a manner that the reader will get a complete feel of sports.” To be priced between Rs. 7-10, the weekly will be published out of Bangalore. Though available only in the city to begin with, it will expand to other areas in a phased manner.

Targeted at the complete sports buff, the 16-page sport tabloid will extensively cover local sports like school and college events. Though Sports Star from the Hindu is an obvious competitor, Sportvision is pitching itself as a niche product. “Our extent and nature of coverage is very different from others. But of course, to some extent we will be competing against Sport Star and the sports section of newspapers,” says Subramaniam.

Even as the tabloid receives its final touch up, the role played by the cricketer himself is still unclear. According to Subramaniam, Anil will contribute to a photo section called Kumble Camp with snaps he himself takes on his tours. What remains to be seen is whether a combination of product novelty and star appeal will add up to a good score board for the tabloid.
